Payson Arizona...Cool Mountain Town!
Our historic community is nestled in the "Heart of Arizona" and home to roughly 15,000 citizens. We are served by state highways 87 and 260.
Payson was founded as Union Park in 1882. People in the area called it Green Valley until the post office was established. The postmaster, Frank C. Hise, then renamed it for Senator Louis Edward Payson, who, as congressional chairman of Post Office and Post Roads, was responsible for Hise's appointment.

At 5,000 feet elevation, Payson is a mountain town that’s a good gateway to escape summer’s heat or enjoy winter’s snow. The moderate climate is perfect. Summers are warm but not too hot and just right for fishing, boating or swimming. Payson does receive snow in the winter but it’s not extreme. Higher elevations outside of town along the Mogollon Rim will have greater snow depths, making these areas the place for skiing & snow play. Plus, weather in Payson means mainly sunny days on average.
Our town looks to the Payson Unified School District for educational needs. Citizens seeking higher educational opportunities need look no further than Gila Community College.
Payson Municipal Airport not only serves the community's aviation needs, but also hosts annual events such as air shows.

We are located in Arizona's "Rim Country," so named due to the overwhelming presence of the Mogollon Rim, an escarpment over 7,000 feet that presents a dramatic drop of over 2,000 feet to the communities below. It is covered in forest and grassland and has been the home to Native Americans, cowboys, ranchers, farmers, hunters, fishermen and nature lovers for centuries. It is a land of extreme beauty, natural endowments and historical significance.
Ninety-seven percent of the land around Payson is under the jurisdiction of the United States Forest Service, providing ample opportunities for hiking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities.
Payson is the site of the annual Arizona State Championship Old Time Fiddlers Contest, as well as the World's Oldest Continuous Rodeo and various other events.
The area is also home to three golf courses, two of which belong to private country clubs. Mazatzal Casino is operated by the Tonto Apache Indian Reservation near the south end of the city.
Our region is a true paradise on Earth with a rich history, fascinating culture, and no lack of things to see and do. Stop by our United Country office and let us share Payson with you.
